Wenchang Builds an Economy Beyond Rocket Launches

Wenchang is trying to turn rocket launches into a lasting space economy. The city has advantages for launches: it is near the equator, where the Earth's rotation can give rockets extra help, and its coast makes it easier to transport large rockets by ship.

Its state-run launch site began missions in 2016. In November 2024, Wenchang added China's first dedicated commercial space launch site. It is now the only place in China with both state-run and commercial launch facilities. Together, the two sites recorded 21 orbital missions in 2025.

Officials want an aerospace ecosystem that includes tourism, rocket manufacturing, satellite operations, and data applications. As of April, Wenchang International Aerospace City had 673 aerospace companies, compared with 30 in 2021.

Tourism still matters, but launch dates can change. Museums, simulations, beaches, food, and cultural attractions may give visitors and local residents reasons to remain even if they miss a rocket.
