Drought Reveals Old Shipwrecks in the Danube

The Danube River fell to unprecedented low levels in regions of Serbia and Croatia following a prolonged summer of heatwaves and drought across Europe. Near Novi Sad in Serbia, water receded by several hundred meters, stranding boats in a marina filled with green slurry and forcing barges to navigate only the deeper sections of the river. The drought exposed hundreds of square kilometers of sandbanks.

The diminished water depth severely disrupted transportation infrastructure. Serbia's energy minister disclosed that fuel imports achieved merely 25% of the July target, as barges and tankers operated at only 30% to 40% of their standard cargo capacity. The low water levels also impaired fisheries and tourism operations, while environmental experts issued warnings about potential long-term consequences for wildlife populations.

In Croatia, receding waters unveiled a freight vessel that sank in 1937, while in eastern Serbia, the corroded remnants of a German river flotilla deliberately scuttled in 1944 reemerged, posing significant navigation hazards. Although Serbia's hydrometeorological service forecast a modest water level increase following upstream rainfall, this episode underscores the vulnerability of major rivers that serve critical functions in transportation, tourism, and sustaining local livelihoods.
