Great Apes Kiss and Cuddle to Keep Peace

Scientists studied chimpanzees and bonobos at two places in Africa. They watched the apes for five minutes before peanuts arrived.

The apes touched, hugged, and kissed each other. When apes did this, they shared food more peacefully. Groups that touched more were nicer to each other. The scientists think this behavior is very old, maybe seven million years old.

This study helps us understand how animals and people act together. Touch can help build trust before problems happen. It may help groups stay calm, but it does not solve every problem.
