Tesla Cybercabs Carry Passengers With No Steering Wheel
The cars have no driver or pedals, while US regulators investigate.
Tesla has begun carrying passengers in Cybercabs in Austin, Texas. The small Robotaxi vehicles have no driver. They have no steering wheel, brake pedal, or accelerator pedal. People ask for rides through Tesla’s Robotaxi app, but the service is limited and a customer may get a different Tesla vehicle.
Tesla says more than 40 Cybercabs have entered service. The car has two seats, butterfly-style doors, and a large screen. Tesla designed it for self-driving travel, not for a passenger to take control.
US safety regulators are now looking at Tesla’s certification of the Cybercab. The investigation does not say the car is unsafe. It asks whether a vehicle without normal driving controls meets federal safety standards.
