Three Wild Dogs Walked 4,126 Km to Find Mates

Three African wild dog brothers left their home in Zambia and travelled an amazing 4,126 kilometers. Their trip lasted about nine months. Scientists say it is the longest recorded journey by a land mammal in Africa.

The dogs were looking for a new place to live and for mates. Young wild dogs sometimes leave their family pack to start a new one. This is called dispersal. The three brothers had GPS collars, so researchers could follow them. They moved through places with roads, farms and people. In the end, they settled in a new area in Zambia’s Luangwa Valley ecosystem.
