Japan Earthquake Hits Kumamoto, Killing at Least 13

A strong earthquake hit Kumamoto in southern Japan. At least 13 people died, the prime minister said. Rescue workers are still checking damaged places.

The earthquake broke roads and caused power cuts. Some old stone walls at Kumamoto Castle also fell down. Trains stopped on the island of Kyushu.

Many people moved to safe shelters. A tsunami warning was given soon after the earthquake, but it ended two hours later.

Earthquakes can have aftershocks. These are smaller earthquakes that happen after the main one. People in the area are being asked to stay careful.
