Trump $1 Coin Revives Debate Over Living Presidents

U.S. Mint released a $1 coin with President Donald Trump’s portrait to mark America’s 250th anniversary. It went on sale on September 2 in collector rolls and bags. The coins are legal tender but sold above their one-dollar face value.

The front shows Trump’s portrait. The reverse shows the Presidential Seal, with an eagle and the number 250. The Mint says the coin was authorised by a 2020 law that lets the Treasury secretary issue special $1 coins for the 2026 anniversary. That law says a living person’s portrait cannot appear on the reverse. Trump’s portrait is on the obverse, not the reverse.

Critics point to a different, older rule that says portraits on United States currency and securities must show deceased people. They argue that this principle should cover coins too. Treasury officials argue that the older rule concerns paper currency and that the anniversary law provides separate authority for this coin.

The coin therefore raises a legal question rather than settling one. Supporters call it an anniversary design; opponents see a break with an important tradition.
