China's Private Rocket Company Achieves a Reusable Booster Milestone

China has made important progress in reusable rocket technology. On August 19, 2026, LandSpace, a private space company, launched its Zhuque-3 rocket and successfully brought back the first-stage booster. The booster landed upright on special legs at a landing site.

This was China's first successful land recovery of an orbital rocket booster by a private company. The mission also successfully delivered its cargo into orbit. Earlier in July, a government-owned rocket stage was recovered at sea using nets.

Reusable boosters can make space launches cheaper. Traditional rockets are thrown away after one use, so companies must build new ones for each mission. A booster that can fly multiple times reduces costs and allows more frequent launches. However, the booster must survive extreme heat, control its flight path carefully, and pass safety checks before flying again.

LandSpace's Zhuque-3 uses liquid oxygen and methane fuel. The company plans to reuse its boosters many times in the future.
