Why Do Mosquitoes Bite Some People More Than Others?

Female mosquitoes bite humans because they require protein from blood to develop their eggs. These insects can detect people from approximately 10 metres away using visual and smell-related signals. Carbon dioxide from our breath and skin activates their host-seeking behaviour. Adults typically produce more carbon dioxide than children, making them more attractive targets.

Mosquitoes also respond to body heat and moisture. Pregnancy, exercise and larger body size can increase these signals. At closer distances, mosquitoes detect skin odours produced by bacteria on our skin. Scientists have identified over 500 volatile compounds on human skin. Research involving 64 participants found that mosquitoes strongly preferred people with higher levels of carboxylic acids.

Interestingly, the most attractive person's score was 100 times higher than the least attractive person's. These preferences remained consistent over several years. However, individual reactions to bites vary significantly. Some people develop large, itchy reactions while others show minimal response. Experts recommend using proven repellents like DEET or picaridin, and wearing protective clothing to reduce mosquito bites.
