Almost the Entire Moon Is About to Disappear

On August 27 and 28, the Moon will look very different. Earth's shadow will cover about 96% of it.

This is a partial lunar eclipse. It will be easy to see in North and South America if the sky is clear. More than 3 billion people may see at least part of the eclipse.

A lunar eclipse happens when Earth moves between the Sun and the Moon. Earth then puts its shadow on the Moon.

A solar eclipse is different. The Moon moves between the Sun and Earth, so the Moon's shadow falls on Earth.
