Driver Saves Rival From Burning Car at China GT

The crash happened about 20 minutes into the opening China GT race in Shanghai. Neil Verhagen was approaching Turn 14 in a BMW while trying to pass David Chen's Ferrari. Verhagen partly drove onto the grass, lost control on the damp surface, and made contact with Chen's car.

The two cars slid toward the corner. Millroy's Ferrari was struck from the side and quickly became engulfed in fire. The race was red-flagged, meaning it was stopped for safety.

Hartog stopped his Porsche near the crash and ran over. He first tried one side of the damaged Ferrari. Then he took a fire extinguisher from an approaching marshal, put out some flames, and pulled Millroy from the cockpit. Motorsport.com reported that this took about 49 seconds.

Millroy later said he could not remember the time around the crash. He credited Hartog with saving his life. He was taken to hospital with several injuries, including broken ribs and a bruised lung.
