Himalayan Ice Loss Puts India’s Economy at Risk

The Himalayas are losing ice faster than before. A new report says this could bring more floods and water problems to India. Glaciers are large, slow-moving bodies of ice. As they melt, they can leave behind lakes that may become dangerous.

The report says 56 glacial lakes in India are rated very high risk. It also says Himalayan water supports farms, homes and businesses far downstream. The report does not say that ice loss alone will decide India’s economic future.

The researchers want better monitoring, early warnings and less black carbon, a dark pollution that can make ice melt faster. They say countries in the region need to work together because rivers and floods cross borders.
